(C-14). Forty-nine strains of the cowpea group were tested in relation to their tolerance al low pH in culture medium with pH 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, and 7.0, the evaluation was made by measuring the optical density of cultures. The results showed that the majority of strains exhibited higher optical density when the pH of the medium was between 6.0 and 7.0. Thirty-four of the forty-nine strains tested in acid medium, were evaluated in symbiosis with "siratro" (Macroptilium atropurpureum) cultived in nutritive solution (pH 4.0, 5.0, 6.0 and 7.0). The acidity affected the production of dry mass, nodules number nad nitrogen fixation in siratro associated with Rhizobium of cowpea group. From all the strains tested, the Arg. IV, that showed better performance under acid conditions in relation to all parameters studied.
