This paper is an attempt to analyze how the Brazilian government is trying to develop the Legal Amazon region's agricultural sector through colonization, and to show what has been done by INCRA to achieve the development of this region which constitutes 59.2% of the national territory. In order to develop such a study, we analyze the legal framework for colonization, and we try to evaluate the effects of its implementation on the Amazon reality, through data collected in field research in the Amazon. We conclude that INCRA counts with the necessary legal base, but that there are some imperfections in the enforcement of the legislation. Thus, a successful colonization will require new operational policies, which may correct the present imperfections.
