Azolla is a tiny aquatic Pteridophyta, with geographical distribution. It has in leaves cavity a ciano-bacteria, called Anabaena azollae. This association has capacity to fix N2, in field at some order that the Symbiosis Rhizobium-leguminosa, becoming that a great potencial for the agricultural in areas of "varzea" (a temporary inundated plain). Deeper studies about this system many give the basis for genetic engineering engaging the genes nif.
